Discover Moms Chicken And Waffles

Tucked in the heart of North Park at Moms Chicken And Waffles, 3112 University Ave, San Diego, CA 92104, United States, this cozy diner has earned its reputation as one of San Diego’s favorite comfort food spots. Walking through the doors feels like stepping into someone’s kitchen on a Sunday morning-warm smiles, sizzling sounds from the griddle, and that irresistible aroma of fried chicken blending with sweet maple syrup. It’s a place where locals gather after church, students come for late brunches, and travelers stop by just to taste what everyone’s been talking about.

On my first visit, I ordered their signature dish: the chicken and waffles plate that put them on the map. The chicken was perfectly golden and crispy, seasoned with a mix of spices that hit every note-peppery, savory, and just a hint of sweetness. The waffle underneath was fluffy inside, slightly crisp outside, and soaked up the house-made syrup like a sponge. It wasn’t overly sweet, and together, the combination created a perfect balance of textures and flavors. That dish alone explains why regulars swear by it.

Beyond the classic combo, their menu is full of Southern-inspired favorites. You’ll find dishes like shrimp and grits, catfish platters, mac and cheese that tastes homemade, and collard greens simmered just right. For breakfast lovers, the lineup includes everything from biscuits and gravy to loaded omelets. Even the coffee has that rich, freshly brewed flavor you’d expect from a neighborhood diner that truly cares about every detail. Each plate feels like it’s made with pride-because it is.

What stands out most about this place is consistency. After several visits, I’ve noticed that the food quality never wavers. According to a local food critic from the San Diego Union-Tribune, Mom’s has maintained a near-perfect record for food freshness and service satisfaction since opening. That reliability speaks volumes in a city known for its competitive dining scene. Yelp reviews back it up too, with customers praising everything from the portion sizes to the friendly waitstaff who remember your name after a few visits.

The atmosphere adds to the charm. With walls decorated in vintage family photos and cozy booths lining the sides, the diner feels personal. During weekends, you can expect a line out the door, but it’s worth the wait. I once chatted with a couple who had driven from Los Angeles just to eat here after seeing it featured on a local food blog. They weren’t disappointed-and neither was I.

One thing I’ve learned through years of exploring restaurants across Southern California is that the best places don’t try too hard-they just do what they do well. Mom’s is exactly that. No gimmicks, no fusion trends-just authentic, soulful cooking done right. Their commitment to freshness is evident in every bite. According to the National Restaurant Association, over 70% of diners now prefer locally sourced ingredients, and Mom’s supports that trend by partnering with nearby farms for their produce and poultry. That local connection not only improves flavor but builds trust with the community.

Even their service model shows thoughtfulness. When I once asked about allergens, the server immediately checked with the chef and returned with clear, helpful information. That transparency builds confidence and proves they care about more than just serving food-they care about the people eating it. Few diners take that kind of responsibility seriously, but this one does.

If you ever find yourself in San Diego craving something comforting, this spot deserves a place on your list. Whether you’re there for brunch with friends or a solo meal after a long week, you’ll find warmth on your plate and in the atmosphere. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, savor the moment, and maybe even plan your next visit before you leave.

  • We went to this place because it had a 4.9 rating on Google. When we drove by i was shocked but happy to see there was no wait. However the curb appeal looked a little dismal. Walking in, it's a little dark and there is a strong unappealing odor that may have been coming from the bathroom?? We chose a table furthest from the bathroom and after a few minutes it was fine. The best part about this place is definitely the food. Every component was so tasty and well seasoned. I ordered the smothered chicken and waffles and my daughter got the regular chicken and waffles. I didn't know mine came with potatoes but after trying one, Im glad it did! The potatoes were delicious and the texture was perfect. The gravy was also great and not heavy or greasy. Its just so damn good. I can't wait to go back again.

  • Tucked inside U-31, this is some of the best food in North Park and definitely the best chicken. After sampling the chicken & waffle dippers at a food festival, we knew we had to come back for more. There’s a quick and easy food kiosk at the back of U-31 and you can take advantage of the great bar service and music while you wait for/enjoy your food! We will definitely be back for more!

  • Saying this may very well be the best fried chicken in Southern California might not say enough. Perfect execution on the waffles, the crispy bacon, the potatoes, all exactly what you dream of for breakfast. The chicken was perfectly cooked, you could smell the seasoning the second the plate hit the table and it was perfectly balanced with the waffles. True southern comfort food in the heart of Southern California. San Diego must!

  • The chicken and waffles was delicious! Side fries was alright. Not much going on when we were there but it meant less of a wait.
